Marquez deserved better vs. Pacquiao

The old adage says life’s not fair.

Nobody would have to convince Juan Manuel Marquez of its validity.

After taking Manny Pacquiao to his very limit in two agonizingly close fights in 2004 and 2008, Marquez had to watch as his former rival’s career reached new heights under the tutelage of trainer Freddie Roach in the ring and promoter Bob Arum outside it.

While Pacquiao became widely recognized as the pound-for-pound king after successful forays up in weight against aging superstars such as Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley, Marquez’s career stalled after he took the one gamble that Pacquiao has been unable to take.

It was Marquez who welcomed Floyd Mayweather back to boxing in 2009, and a lethal combination of a poorly planned weight gain by the lightweight champion, a heavy Mayweather’s blatant disregard for the agreed catchweight and Money’s irresistible boxing skills resulted in Mayweather easily outboxing Marquez for 12 rounds.

The result saw Marquez cast aside, no longer worthy of consideration for elite pound-for-pound status by most commentators. Solid victories over worthy lightweight challengers David Diaz and Michael Katsidis could not restore the luster to a reputation that had been tarnished by the ease at which he had succumbed to the sport’s errant genius.

It was no surprise that Marquez spent much time campaigning for another shot at pound-for-pound greatness, this time against his old nemesis Pacquiao. It was the fans’ choice for Pacquiao to fight last May, a preference vindicated when a shot Mosley produced a wretchedly negative performance in a dull fight.

Finally, fans were given the "thrillogy" fight they had wanted. It was not at the weight they wanted, with Marquez having to move up two weight classes to fight at a catchweight of 144 pounds. But the Mexican legend was confident that this welterweight match would have a happier ending for him than his first. And the omens were good with Marquez’s physique looking impressively like a fully fledged welterweight at the weigh-ins Friday and the similarly proportioned Pacquiao unable to repeat Mayweather’s trick of weighing in deliberately heavy.

And when the fight began Saturday night, Marquez was awesome.

As we noticed back in May, Mosley’s clumsy attempt to fight as a counterpuncher exposed serious flaws in Pacquiao’s game that Marquez would technically be well-placed to exploit. Having coped with the weight gain better than we expected, Marquez was able to clearly outbox the champion over the course of 12 rounds.

Although it was a close, competitive fight, it was the Mexican who was doing the little things that should have caught the judges’ eyes. He dictated the pace of the fight, keeping his distance well and only briefly being drawn into the frenetic brawls at which Pacquiao excels. His footwork was superb, as he would repeatedly land a punch and then immediately take a step back to avoid Pacquiao’s response. He would then be perfectly positioned for a counterpunch.

ROUND-BY-ROUND

This was where Marquez was at his best, with his precision punching allowing him to land crisp, clean punches that more than once hurt Pacquiao. An increasingly bedraggled Pacquiao was reduced to headhunting as he tried to overcompensate by forcing the pace.

But just as against Mosley, Pacquiao lacked the patience and the composure to work his way inside by picking his punches. Instead his wild lunges and swings were exasperated signs of his ineffectiveness, not effective aggression. Pacquiao lashed out at being made to fight and lose Marquez’s fight.

On the British telecast of the fight, Pacquiao’s friend and training partner Amir Khan sorrowfully admitted that he had Marquez winning the fight while doing commentary from ringside. Roach clearly told Pacquiao that he was losing the fight in the corner. And when the final bell was rung, Pacquiao had the look of a beaten man.

And then the judges announced that the loser was in fact the victor. Whether it was because the judges were blinded by Pacquiao’s greater celebrity or were simply giving the fighter on the front foot the benefit of the doubt in close rounds, it was the wrong decision. Marquez knew it, Pacquiao knew it and the fans who booed the universally popular champion knew it.

And more than the result of a fight, they knew that boxing, like life, wasn’t fair.

Pacquiao: Negotiations for Mayweather fight almost done

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxer Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao has revealed only a few details need to be ironed out regarding his possible mega-fight against American fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Pacquiao recently confirmed that negotiations are ongoing with Mayweather's team. Mayweather also called on Pacquiao to sign a contract for a May 5 fight date.

"Ready na tayo. Kung natuloy 'yan, 'pag pumirma na s'ya sa kontrate, pirma na rin tayo," Pacquiao said. (We are ready. If it pushes through, once he signs the contract then I'll sign the contract.)

Pacquiao said there are only a few details left to be tackled in the negotiations.

"Maliit na bagay na pinag-uusapan, malapit ng matapos ang negotiation," he said. (Only the little things are being worked out and negotiations are almost done.)

He said he has no issue with the May 5 fight date, saying it is a good month for the fight.

Pacquiao also laughed off Mayweather's recent comments about him, wherein the American boxer said Pacquiao actually has 6 losses on his record instead of 3.

Mayweather said Pacquiao lost to Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez three times, bringing his total number of losses to six.

"Kung ganyan ang paniniwala n'ya, eh di respetuhin natin," Pacquiao said. (If that's what he thinks, we have to respect it).

The fighting congressman from Sarangani is planning to watch the friendly match between the Philippine Azkals and the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium along with his wife and kids.

Lt. Col. Pacquiao ready for 'battle'

MANILA, Philippines - Boxing champion and Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao is now officially a lieutenant colonel in the Reserve Force of the Philippine Army, after being donned the rank in a ceremony Monday morning in Fort Bonifacio.

Major General Emmanuel Bautista, Commanding General of the Philippine Army, and Brigadier General Alex Albano formally gave Pacquiao a shoulder board bearing his new rank.

In a prepared speech, Pacquiao said he plans to take his new responsibilities as a member of the reserve officer corps of the Philippine Army seriously.

"I want to take my role and responsibility to higher ground, to compensate for the discomfort I probably caused the Philippine Army family when some personalities questioned my commissionship as lieutenant colonel," Pacquiao said.

"Obviously, I am not trained for military operations, but it should be emphasized that reservists, by their true nature, are civilian provisional first and military personnel second," he added.

Pacquiao said, he never sought to be promoted to lieutenant colonel.

As a new lieutenant colonel, Pacquiao also became the executive officer of the Sarangani 1st Early Reserve Battalion.

His role in the reserve forces will be non-combat, however. Instead, Pacquiao will be in charge when there are relief operations or disaster management operations.

Pacquiao earned the lieutenant colonel rank in the Reserve Force last September 21, jumping five ranks from his previous rank of master sergeant.

His commissionship was questioned by several quarters, with defense and security expert Dr. Clarita Carlos saying that Pacquiao's honorary degree and status as a world boxing champion was not enough to earn him the rank as a commissioned officer in the Philippine Army.

Maj. Gen. Bautista defended Pacquiao's new rank, however, citing the provisions of Section 44 of Republic Act 7077, which provides that elected officials and presidential appointees may be commissioned into the Reserve Force.

Asked to comment on the criticisms, Pacquiao said, "Siguro yung mga nagku-question, hindi masyadong nakakaintindi. Intindihin na lang natin."

Pacquiao promised the Philippine Army that he will continue "to win my few more fights and bring honor to our country."

"Should you need legislative support, my congressman's office will be there to help you," he added.

Manny Pacquiao can make Mayweather fight happen

 By John F. McKenna (McJack): World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO’s) is now in a position that he can push Top Rank CEO Bob Arum to make the fight with WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 25 KO’s) happen.  

The dynamics of making the long sought match between Pound for Pound king Pacquiao and the undefeated Mayweather has changed significantly since Pacquiao’s controversial win on November 12 over WBO/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s. 

Before Manny’s fight with Marquez many boxing observers were questioning whether Mayweather really wanted to take on the Filipino icon. Floyd is very protective of his 42-0 record and the feeling by many was that he was unwilling to take the risk of engaging Pacquiao.  

But Pacquiao struggled in his fight with Marquez and a majority of boxing fans feel that he did not deserve the decision. Mayweather on the other hand cruised to an easy one sided win over Marquez in 2009. The perception of many boxing fans changed based on Manny’s sub par performance against Marquez. Going into the fight the betting odds favoring Pacquiao were as high as 10 to 1. After a couple of rounds however, it was clear that Pacquiao despite all his improvements was still baffled by Marquez’s defensive and counter punching skills. The reasoning is that Mayweather has no peer in the two areas which give Manny the most problems.  

Shortly after the conclusion of the Pacquiao – Marquez fight the Mayweather camp showed an interest in making the fight with Pacquiao. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum on the other hand who had long expressed a desire to promote such a fight changed his stance and indicated that he wanted to pursue a 4th fight with Marquez.  It has been rumored that Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach and conditioning coach Alex Ariza would like to see the Mayweather fight happen. Manny is now in the position that he needs to not only state his preference to Arum but to insist that he wants to make Floyd Mayweather Jr. his next opponent. The likelihood of the Mega fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather being arranged is now at the highest point it has ever been. The ball is in Manny Pacquiao’s court.

Pacquiao beats Marquez by controversial decision

 

LAS VEGAS – The potential $200 million fight was saved by a very slim judges’ call.

Manny Pacquiao defeated Juan Manuel Marquez in yet another excruciatingly close fight, winning a majority decision Saturday before a sellout crowd of 16,368 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to keep hopes alive for a 2012 match between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Judge Robert Hoyle had it a draw, 114-114, as did Yahoo! Sports. But judge Dave Moretti favored Pacquiao 115-113 and Glenn Trowbridge had Pacquiao winning 116-112. Thus, Pacquiao retained his World Boxing Organization welterweight title and kept alive a mega-bout against Mayweather.

Upon hearing the decision, Marquez and his team stormed out of the ring.

Mayweather, who routed Marquez by winning every round of a 2009 fight, is the only fighter in the world other than the Filipino congressman with a legitimate claim to boxing’s mythical pound-for-pound top spot.

 

And after Saturday’s performance, Mayweather may move up regardless.

Pacquiao has had difficulty in three fights with Marquez’s counter-punching style and Saturday was no different. Marquez, who bulked up to 142 pounds, was able to consistently land a straight right hand and keep Pacquiao off-balance.

Pacquiao, who had been on a 14-fight winning streak going into the match, was only able to get his offense untracked in spurts. And unlike the first two bouts, in which he had four knockdowns, Pacquiao was unable to get Marquez onto the floor.

Manny Pacquiao's upcoming fight with Juan Manuel Marquez is surrounded by intrigue as Angel Hernandez, Marquez's new condition coach is fingered in the BALCO case.

Here's the good news for Juan Manuel Marquez, who will face Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on Nov. 12: His new conditioning coach, Angel Hernandez, isn’t advocating that Marquez drink his own urine as a nutritional supplement, which Marquez did before he fought Floyd Mayweather.

Here’s the bad news for Juan Manuel Marquez: His new conditioning coach, Angel Hernandez, has been identified as Angel (Memo) Heredia, the man who supplied steroids to track stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery and later became the key government witness in the case against BALCO that landed the company’s founder, Victor Conte, behind bars and implicated dozens of athletes as users of performance-enhancing drugs. Hernandez was hiding in plain sight, although he had changed his last name while working with Marquez at his training camp in Mexico. Conte recognized Hernandez on a recent episode of HBO’s boxing reality show “24/7: Pacquiao-Marquez.”

According to transcripts of his testimony in 2008 in which he testified against track coach Trevor Graham, Heredia admitted to giving the blood-booster EPO, human growth hormone and insulin to Jones in 2000 at the request of Graham, who was then Jones’ coach. He also said he sold banned substances to Montgomery.

Heredia walked away without punishment from the feds because he made a deal with IRS agent Jeff Novitzky, who was heading an investigation into steroid distribution, and rolled on others, including Conte and several other athletes.

Conte now works as a conditioning coach for bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire and has re-invented himself as an anti-steroid advocate. He says one difference between himself and Heredia is that Conte paid a heavy price for his misdeeds and Heredia didn’t. “He supplied documents and testimony that were damaging to many athletes,” Conte says. “As a result, Heredia received leniency and walked away from the case a free man.”

Heredia’s presence in Marquez’s camp certainly raises suspicion on what is going on there, because Marquez, a former champion at 126, 130 and 135 pounds, is bulking up to fight at 145 pounds — the most he has ever weighed for a boxing match. He fought against Mayweather at 142 pounds and was battered all over the ring before losing a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision in 2009.

Mayweather has called for random testing for steroids by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. His last two opponents, Shane Mosley and Victor Ortiz, underwent the random testing, and it remains the major hurdle for a match between Mayweather and Pacquiao. The fact that Heredia is working in the Marquez camp highlights the need for random testing by an independent agency, if for no other reason than to allay suspicions that boxing is dirty.

“This is exactly why Floyd has been adamant about testing in boxing,” said Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s adviser. “He wants to make sure that the playing field in boxing is level. He will never fight anyone who doesn’t agree to random blood and urine testing for steroids.”

While you may not like Mayweather as a person or how he carries himself outside of the ring, he is dead-on in his stance on random testing for steroids in boxing, something not everyone in the sport agrees is needed. Bob Arum of Top Rank, who promotes both Marquez and Pacquiao, says the issue of steroid abuse is overblown.

“You don’t have to do that anymore,” Arum said on a conference call Wednesday afternoon. “Wake up and see what these conditioners are saying. They’re using naturally, totally legal substances, and using state of the art conditioning methods. That’s not because of anything other than the fact that there have been advancements in legal methods. The steroid problem is fading into the past.”

If that w as indeed the case, then none of the major U.S. professional sports leagues would have some form of random testing for steroids and the Olympics would dismantle its testing program. Arum maintains that any steroid testing should be conducted under the auspices of the state boxing commissions. That has proven faulty in the past. When BALCO was operating, Conte supplied Mosley with steroids before he fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2005 in Las Vegas. Mosley never tested positive on any of the tests administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

On another conference call on Wednesday evening, Marquez said he didn’t know anything about Heredia’s past.

If Marquez knocks out Pacquiao, everyone will wonder if he got an illegal boost from Heredia.

“I’ve worked very hard and I’m not going to stop training and getting ready for the fight,” Marquez said. “If they want to do whatever doping or drug testing that they want to do, Olympic-style, or whatever they want to do. I’ll do it. I’m prepared. Just as long as (Pacquiao) does it, too.”
