Liverpool sign £6m Enrique from Newcastle

Liverpool finally agreed a £6m fee for the left-back they need for the new campaign last night, with Jose Enrique's long-awaited departure from Newcastle United compounding manager Alan Pardew's problems.

Kenny Dalglish's club were devastated to miss out on Gaël Clichy when the Frenchman opted for City's better wages last month, enabling their manager, Roberto Mancini, to gazump Dalglish, and with a lack of options in the transfer market Liverpool have had to sacrifice hopes of a lightning-fast wing-back. The Spaniard, Newcastle's player of the year in 2009-10 and a key part of the club's Championship winning side of that season, underwent a medical at Melwood yesterday. He leaves Newcastle increasingly looking like a side who have failed to invest since the £35m departure of Andy Carroll to Liverpool in January.

Though 22-year-old Argentine Emiliano Insua is still at Liverpool and played at Tranmere for the Reds' reserves last week, the player used heavily by their former manager Rafael Benitez is one of the players Liverpool now need to move on.

Liverpool defender Danny Wilson has revealed that he would welcome a loan move back to his former club Rangers. Wilson has made only two appearances and Rangers' manager Ally McCoist would welcome his return.
